Fun shirt ideas

Every year we have a poster with a fun saying or a quote on it and seniors and returning letter winners get to be on it. It is going to be my senior year this season (which is crazy) so I wanted it to be an awesome poster. A couple days ago all of the seniors had a meeting and we thought of some ideas for the poster and our fun shirts. Fun shirts are usually what we wear to school on game days, or we wear them over our jerseys to warm up in. They are usually a bright color and have Kennedy Volleyball on them. After discussing about a million options for the poster we decided on a pretty sweet one.

On the bottom of the poster will be our schedule and the freshman, sophomore, and jv teams’ pictures. Right above that we are going to have a picture of all of our forearms in a circle with a volleyball in the center. We are going to each pick a word to write on our arms that represents us, or is important to us. Above that picture is going to be a full body picture of us. We are going to wear dark skinny jeans, a black shirt and black heels. The picture is going to be taken downtown in front of a brick building. On the very top of the poster we are going to have the saying “Inhale confidence, exhale doubt”. I am really excited about the outcome of this poster, I think it will turn out really cool.

For our fun shirts we decided on a black shirt with neon blue writing. It is going to say “Bring ‘Em Out” on the front and have a faded out volleyball behind the text. On the back it is going to say “Don’t worry we are just wearing our warm ups”. I can’t wait to see how this turns out, because it should be sweet. We were also thinking about making a spirit jersey to wear as warm ups this year, just to have something special for our senior season. This is what a spirit jersey looks like.

I am really excited for this season, our goal is to make it to state and I think we can definitely do that this year. We have worked really hard the past couple years, and have just come up a little short. This year we are coming into this season strong and determined to get that state qualifying banner, and possibly win a state championship.

Beach Volleyball

Since beach is starting soon, I thought I might as well go over some of the main concepts and rules of playing in the sand. Beach volleyball is totally different than indoor. Different rules, different strategies, and different skills to learn. Although there are different rules you have to have the same mindset to compete in either sport. In order to be successful in beach volleyball you need to know the important rules and learn some of the strategies.

The rules involved in beach are very different from indoor. The main difference is the rule about setting. In beach you are not allowed to set the ball unless it has absolutely no spin (which is pretty much impossible). So when you are setting your partner your best option is to forearm pass it. It takes some time to get used to controlling the ball that way but you will get the hang of it after a while. You also can not open hand tip the ball like you can in indoor. The other main rule is that if you are blocking and you touch the ball you and your partner only have 2 contacts to get it back over the net, where in indoor you would have 3 contacts.

Obviously in beach volleyball you are playing in the sand and usually you are playing doubles with a partner. This leads to some strategies that can help you succeed in this awesome sport. The first tip is to either serve/ hit to the player that can’t pass or the player that is the least offensive threat. This will give you a better opportunity to score on that rally. Serving and attacking to the person who is not as good at passing will most likely make their side become out of system, giving you a free ball. Serving and hitting to the person who is the least offensive threat will give you a better chance at digging their attack. If you are playing a team where both players can attack and pass decently then you can try serving in between them and that will usually get them out of system. Other strategies include blocking, going over on the second ball, and using smart shots. In beach blocking can be a little tricky and it takes a lot of practice to get used to it, but it is really fun when you stuff block someone in beach. If you and your partner decide to block, the person blocking tells the defender what part of the court he/ she is going to be blocking. The defender is then responsible for the other part of the court. For example if I was blocking the cross court shots for both hitters I would hold up 2 fingers on each hand (1 finger on each hand means I am blocking the line shots) and my partner would defend the line shots. Some smart shots in beach are a short pokey (tipping it with your knuckles) or a high roll shot to the deep corners. These shots will cause the other team to scramble for the ball and give you an easy ball back over.

Beach is such a fun sport, I can’t wait for practices to start so we can get back out in the sand!

Jump Serve

Last week a 4th grader emailed me and asked if I could answer a few questions for her project on jump serving. I thought it was really cool that she chose that as her topic, and I was so happy to help. This is what I sent back to her, answering her questions and giving her some advice for her future volleyball career.

I think it's awesome that you are doing your project on jump serving. Here are my answers to your questions :)

1. There are 2 different kind of jump serves, the jump float and the jump top spin. I will explain how to do both.

Jump Float:
This is the serve that I use in games. It is really effective, but it takes a lot of practice. The most important thing about this serve is your contact. You want to contact the ball with a strong hand and solid wrist. You want to make sure you contact the ball with mostly just your palm so you can get it to float. You don't want to follow through on this serve, you want to stop your hand once you contact the ball. This serve is meant to make the ball move or float back and forth, so the other teams’ defenders have a hard time passing it. It is tricky to get this serve right away, it takes a lot of reps. So right now, since you are so young if you just practice the toss, footwork and jump you can worry about getting the ball to float once you have the other stuff down. It is awesome that you are thinking about jump serving right now. I don't think I started to jump serve until 8th grade!

Jump Top spin:
This serve requires a toss that is out in front of you so you can have a big approach and attack the ball. People who use this serve usually toss it with the same hand that they are going to be serving it with. While tossing you want to have some spin on the ball that will carry over into the serve. You want to contact the ball high and follow through with your arm, creating a spin on the ball. This one takes a lot of practice and I still haven't perfected it yet.

2. The steps to do a jump serve are just like doing your approach for attacking. If you are right handed its left, right, left. If you are left handed its right, left, right.

3. In practice to get better and more consistent with my jump serve I focus on my technique and take my time on each serve.

4. For a jump top spin you should throw the ball pretty high so you have time to do your approach and still contact the ball high. For a float you will toss it lower because you are not jumping as high. I will attach some videos of each serve so you can see what the tosses are like.

5. If you step over the service line before you contact the ball then the other team gets the point. When you are jump serving you can jump over the line and contact the ball as long as you don't land before contact.

6. Some advice for you would be never give up. I had a dream of playing Division 1 volleyball since I was your age and I never gave up and the hard worked paid off. I just recently committed to Loyola University in Chicago to play volleyball. Just always believe in yourself and keep working hard. Play whenever you can, even if it's just passing or setting the ball against your house, if it's ok with your parents :) Just getting extra touches on the ball will improve your skills.

Hope this helps and good luck with your project!

Life of An Althete

Many athletes know the struggle of keeping up with their social life, academics, and sports. It is very difficult to spend eight hours at school, go to a two hour practice right after school, then be expected to go home and do at least two hours of homework each night, and make time for friends. The weekend is usually the only source of free time you will get, but even then you sometimes can't hang out.

Athletes sometimes have weekend practices, which interfere with other plans. Some people might also put off all the homework due at a later date for the weekend. I know I am guilty of this and find myself in piles of homework every Sunday night. Not only do I have homework and sports on the weekend, but I also have to work six hour shifts on Sunday's sometimes. With football games on Friday nights, the only day I have free to do homework is Saturday. Sometimes you just need a break from everything. This is why planning your week is very important.

I think all student athletes should dedicate one day on the weekend to homework and the other day to do whatever you want. I think it is extremely important to have a break in the middle of the week to provide some relief to the stress of having so much to do. I know that I sometimes get super stressed out and start to freak out at night when I am overwhelmed with everything. Taking a day off to not think about school and sports is something I could definitely use.

Not all people have the option of taking off a day during the weekend. This can be solved by simply trying to get homework done before Sunday night. This will ensure a good night sleep on Sunday and give you a couple of hours before to just relax. I think it is very important for people to simply be lazy every once in a while. There comes a point where you just need to lay in your bed and do absolutely nothing. I find the biggest relief from stress to be simply laying in my bed thinking about nothing. It sounds ridiculous, but I just need some time to myself.

The importance of education is so very high that it can sometimes be very overwhelming. Sports and school might be a top priority for student athletes, but you need to think about yourself first. You need to be happy. Don't think about all your responsibilities for one second and just do what you want. It's not worth doing if it won't benefit you in the long run. Your happiness comes before others and if that means taking a day off from homework then do it. I do not mean ditch the homework altogether, but choose another day to finish it. Planning your week can be very beneficial and is something I think all student athletes should use and take advantage of.

Payment

Athletes put their time and effort into the sports they love. This takes a lot of dedication and is something you must be committed to if you intend on playing in college. Not only is dedication a big part of playing sports, but money. You must always take into consideration the costs of playing sports when deciding whether or not you want to go out or play. Whether it is for equipment or the coaching, sports do cost quite a bit, especially if you play club sports. For example, club softball is pretty expensive.
There are a lot of things you need to play softball, whether it is club or not. Just the basic necessities to play softball can get to be a little pricey. Softball shoes can cost up to two hundred dollars, with the minimum being around eighty dollars, unless you find a good deal. This and the price of socks, shoes, bats, gloves, batting gloves, etc. can add up very quickly. Bats alone cost up to $500 with a minimum of about $350
Another thing you must take into consideration when deciding to play club softball is the price of playing alone. The costs of playing club range anywhere from eight hundred dollars to two thousand. This does not even include the price of staying at a hotel, getting food at tournaments, or buying souvenirs. Sometimes clubs even add in another price for jerseys, separate from the total cost. All in all playing club softball is extremely expensive, especially if you buy a forty dollar sweatshirt at every qualifying tournament.
The costs of playing sports shouldn't be a huge deal breaker when choosing whether or not to play, but it definitely needs to be something somewhat in your family’s budget. You don't want to make your family financially unstable just because you want to play a sport. There are many ways to get deals and clubs usually understand if you cannot afford it. The cost of playing sports is high and does take a lot of dedication, but if you truly love it, it is worth every ounce of money and time you put into it. Sports can bring a lot of joy into your life and even lead to scholarships in college. It all depends on how committed you are and how much time you are willing to put into the sport. Sports might be a little pricey, but the athlete determines how much they get out of their money.

Sport As Kids

There are many athletes out there that can say they have played the sport they love their entire life. Their parents must have started them out young and somewhat influenced the passion their child has for the sport. It is great to start children out playing multiple sports to get them interested early on. This will help them later when they are wanting to decide what to play in high school, if they choose to stick with sports. Knowing what practices are like will help kids get an idea of if they will enjoy playing in high school.
Some high school athletes cannot say they have played the sport they love for most of their life. Some of the best athletes have only started their sport right into high school. I'm not saying you shouldn't encourage your kids when they are young, because I am all for that. Some athletes are naturally talented and I think it is good to spark a love for the sport early on to get kids working hard young. Sports aren’t for everyone though and shouldn’t be forced upon others.
Sports take a lot of time and dedication, but you don't want your kids to get burnt out early on. I have seen athletes lose passion for the sport they used to love, simply because they have been doing the same thing for so long. Other athletes could never get burnt out and keep going strong throughout the years. This all depends on the person and can't really be determined when they're kids. It is all up to the parents to see if they want to encourage sports soon. It can lead to a world of success and ultimately determine your kid’s future.

I, truthfully, am for getting kids to try sports early on, but if they do not want to do it or do not enjoy it you shouldn't force it. Some kids are more into the arts, or simply don't like to be involved. Let kids choose who they want to be. You can encourage them to be involved, but I do not believe in forcing children to participate in extracurricular activities. Sports are a way to make friends and memories throughout the school years, but some people just aren't in the sports world like us athletes. Not every single person's world revolves around sports, unfortunately, although we’d like to believe it does.

campus

Recruitment is a stressful and drawn out event. It could last for three months to four years. It’s a never ending thing. There are multiple aspects in getting recruited.
It all starts with filling out question-airs on the college’s website. Usually this begins at the start of freshman year in high school. Colleges will receive thousands of question applications. Most colleges will pick the ones that they already have an interest in. Once the athlete contacts the school, the college is going to know that the player has an interest and then that makes them have an interest in the player. As a freshman the college coaches can't contact the player but the player can contact by email, phone, or text. If the coach doesn't respond then the player has to try another time. The coach can't call the player back.

Once club season starts, you should email the volleyball coach and let them know what club you are playing on, the back round of the club, and the schedule for the club season. If you do this the coaches are more likely to show up at the tournaments and come to the court you are playing on. Now if you get them to come to the court, make sure you are playing your hardest and show an enormous amount of leadership on the court. Coaches look for communication on the court, cheering on the bench, good sportsmanship, and competitive attitudes.

Your club coach should work their butt of to make sure you get to the point of recruitment. They should have your back in this stage of your career. They have a big say and could help you tremendously in the college search. When you are writing emails make sure you include your coach’s name and information, that way the college coach can get ahold to ask question about you. These college coaches would like to have other coaches that know the player better than just watching and not knowing a thing about them have a say and tell the college coach how they play. Club coaches love this, because they get to chat and brag about players they coach. They want every player they coach to go far. They want them to represent the town and state they come from. If you think about it, wherever a person goes to college at and play a sport, they are representing their high school, town, state, family and friends. A lot of people don’t realize that.

Difficulty

There are so many people that say, "volleyball is easy. You don't have to have any skill playing volleyball. I could do it in my sleep. Basketball and football take actual skill." Little do they know that volleyball takes a lot of skill. When it becomes at a high level, like from 8th grade and up, the time and effort the person puts into volleyball will reflect on how good they are.

There are a lot more aspects that go into volleyball other than, just jumping and swinging or thrusting your arms out at the ball. The way people hold their hands have a HUGE impact on how the ball will be passed. If one hand is in a fist and the other hand is wrapped around the fist then their passes will most likely be accurate. If the hands are wrapped together with the thumbs laying next to each other, the passes will most likely not be as accurate as the other hand wrap. Also, for defense the back row players must know how to read the other teams hitters. They must know how to see the way their body is facing or the way their approach angle is facing. Serve receive for back row players is all about seeing the ball and then beating it to the spot. It has harder than it looks. There are two types of serves, a float serve and a top spin serve. Top spin serves are way harder to pass than float serves. Float serves move different directions before it comes at you, so it is hard to beat the ball to the spot.

Setting is all about thinking and being smart on who to set. The hitters depend on the setter to give them a set, so they can put it down. To be a great setter is having the ability to see which pin the opponents middle is cheating to and then set the opposite pin. Another key is to always jump set as much as they can. More they jump set more the other teams block is going to go up with the setter and then leaves the hitter open.

Every hitter has to be able to see the block and then find a way to hit around it. If there is a hole in the block they need to hit there. If the block is closed but they give up line they need to hit there. If the block is closed but they give up cross then they need to make a shot that will give them a kill. The final option is if the block is closed and they have nothing other than to do than they should tool the blocker. Tooling means they push the ball off the blockers hand so it goes out of bounds.

Regionals

Regionals. A bid to nationals is on the line and you are playing close to home. A lot of tough competition and only 2 teams get their ticket to nationals. Playing in your home state means playing in front of family and friends, which might be added pressure for some girls. Regionals can be fun and stressful at the same time. My experience at regionals this year was awesome.
This year regionals was in Cedar Falls, which is about an hour away from my house and it is also where my team practices. So it felt kind of weird waking up in my own bed on the day of a national qualifier. Usually we are 5-15 hours away. Driving to Cedar Falls on that Saturday morning I had all kinds of emotions running through me. I was more nervous than usual and I think was because I knew that that was our best bet at qualifying. In the back of my head I was thinking about last season and what went down at regionals then. Last year we were put in a tough pool the first day and ended up getting 3rd in our pool and playing in the bronze bracket on Sunday. It just wasn't a good weekend for my team, but we are a whole different team this year and I knew we could do it. I just had this feeling. I wanted that bid so bad for so long I was going to do whatever it took to get it.
On Saturday we were put in a pretty easy pool and won all 3 of our games in 2 sets. Sunday was going to be the real test of what my team could accomplish. I was pumped and I couldn't wait to go get that bid. On Sunday our first game wasn't until 10:00 so we got to sleep in a little but and that is always good. We played Rockets 17 Black in the quarterfinals, which was our first game. In the first set we started off kind of shaky but we fought back and didn't look back from there. We won in 2 sets and now faced CIS (Central Iowa Select) in the semi-finals, and the game to get a bid. The time was finally here, playing for the bid. We were so close I could taste it. We knew this game was going to be a battle, but we were up for it and we wanted revenge because we lost to them in pool play last year. I knew a couple girls from their team from High Performance and playing them in school season and they were a very talented team. We were going to have to play our best and not let up if we wanted to beat them.

Teammate

Every team has teammates they absolutely love or they have no interest in being around them. It is hard having teammates that don't get along. That is something you never want when you are searching for a team to play with. You want to make sure that the girls are people you see yourself hanging with and being friends with forever. When I think of a good teammate, I think of someone that will help me get better, or someone that is going to be in my life and friends with for as long as I live.

Teammates are not just people you say you play a sport with. They should be known as one of your best friends. A good teammate doesn't cheat their way out of things. For example, if you are lifting with another teammate you don't want to skip any lifts or reps. It is kind of like not cheating in school. That doesn't help you or your partner. There are a lot of aspects in being a good teammate. Giving positive and not negative feed back is good. Sometimes the other player likes when another teammate says something like, "hey you should get up faster on that block" or "you almost had it, just more step and you could have gotten it up." A lot of times players like hearing something from another teammate instead of getting yelled at by their coach. Little things like that could help your teammate go a long way. Doing something so little as giving tips doesn't just help them, but puts you in a great spot called a leader. Colleges look for this and want this on their team. That also leads back to my recent blog about getting recruited.

No matter what your job is on the court or field, you have a huge aspect to the team. If you are a bench player that is just as big of a role as the quarter back or point guard or the libero in volleyball. Cheering on the bench could be the determination of what will be the outcome of the game. Maybe the team isn't playing very good and needed a boost, but the bench wasn't cheering loud enough then they lose. Now what if the bench was loud and did everything they could to get the team fired up? Most likely the outcome would have been different. A good teammate cheers on the team no matter what position they are in. They should want the best for all of their team(family).

Stats

Any high school sports team that is somewhat high up in the rankings takes stats and is fairly good at being consistent. Whether it is free throw percentage or number of kills in a game, these statistics help show not only coaches, but players how they are doing on the court. Statistics are a great thing to have, but they can sometimes have a negative effect on athletes and the way they think.
Statistics are a way to show coaches which of the players has the highest percentage in certain areas. This helps coaches make difficult decisions when deciding who to play. Most coaches I have had do not rely only on percentages to decide the starting lineup. They look for who works the hardest, is the most dedicated, has the highest skill level, and then go to the statistics for a final decision. Stats are important, but not overly important to the point that you should worry about them. Your stats do not make or break you as a player.
Stats can become something that fuels you to do better, but you should not focus on just getting good stats. With time and dedication your percentages will rise on their own. If you focus on the game and your team you will soon see an increase in your stats. Stats are a way for individuals to see what they need to work on, but should not become something that takes focus away from your team. Your team is the most important thing. Athletes need to always be playing for their teammates, and stop playing for themselves.

Statistics can be both a good and bad thing to have, depending on the way you use them. Statistics do not define an athlete and should only be used to better the team. Yes, it is nice to have a high digging percentage or the top number of block assists, but this does not tell your story as an athlete. Your story is what you make it and how you carry yourself. Athletes need to understand that it is not all about being the best on the team, but about being the best leader for your team. Someone who always has a positive attitude, focuses on helping others, and simply loves the game itself is the kind of person coaches want on the court. Good statistics is just the icing on the cake.

Reliving Stress

There are many stresses and things that could go wrong being an athlete. The biggest thing for me is the time management. I have practices every day along with the homework and family priorities. I often find myself very busy with little free time to relax or do activities. This is the worst during the busiest part of school season and the busiest part of club season when we are gone for days at a time. When you miss school, you have to do all the make-up work along with all the current work. It can get very tiring and annoying. Also, it is VERY hard not to get distracted by your phone or other devices, especially after a game day or tournament, when you want to check what people said about the game.

Another problem with some athletes is getting tired of your sport. If someone is constantly practicing and playing with no breaks, they might get burnt out and not enjoy playing or not want to play anymore. This is probably more likely to happen if the practices seem repetitive, like they're doing the same things all the time in practice. Some people will get burnt out, but some who really enjoy the game won't. It just depends on the person. Some ways to prevent this from happening is to take a break from it, or in your free time do things non-sports related, so you're not always thinking about it and you're not always with the same people all the time. Sometimes it's not always the sport you get tired of, but the people.

One thing that is great about going on runs is that you control your pace. No one is next to you from the track team, or just one of your friends that want to speed it up or slow it down. If you all of a sudden aren't feeling like running, you can walk. If you want to run as fast as you can, you can do that too. No one is next to you trying to have a conversation that you're simply not interested in. I'm sorry, but some days I do not feel like talking to anyone. I don't mind listening to conversations, but when I run I am running to be with myself. Track is a different story though.

ACT

Most athletes that want to play sports in college seem to always focus on their skill level and if they are good enough to make a team. They worry about the facilities, coaches, teammates, ranking, and their playing time. Athletes seem to be blind to the fact, sometimes, that their grades actually matter too. In order to get into college there are some requirements you must meet, no matter how good you are at sports. One of the things that might be necessary is a high ACT score.

There are many opportunities students have to take the ACT throughout junior and senior year. There is a test date almost every month, or every other month. A student can take the ACT up to as many times as they want, but of course it is going to cost you a lot of money. This is why it is better to just do well on your first or second time taking it.

As it is important to do well on this test, because it will ultimately affect the college you choose, there are many ways you can prepare yourself. The people in charge of the ACT provide students with the option to order a book, or take online practice tests. This will help students see what they need help on and give them an idea of what the test will be like.

Preparing for the ACT can be extremely stressful, and athletes might not always have the time to prepare. This is why many students, like myself, study lightly for the first test to see what they need to work on. If my scores for the math section are low, while the science scores are high, I then know that I need to work on math a lot more than science. This will take some stress of you for the first time, but later on you will really need to dig in if you don't do well the first time.

Always remember that it is not always about if you are physically fit for the sports team at your college, but your grades need to be in tact as well. Some people even have to commit to other places simply because their grades weren't good enough for the college's criteria. School is very important and most athletes in college aren’t going to become professionals. You are going to college to get an education and it just so happens you get to play the sport you love as well. Unless you are seriously focused on going pro, focus on the academics.

Volleyball Drills

Coming up with drills to do in practices is sometimes hard because they have to involve all positions, be productive, and be fun at the same time. Some of my favorite drills are Pra-ja, Columbia, George, Baseball, WIN, and Split Court. All of these drills are fun, productive, and everyone gets a lot of touches.

Pra-ja is a game I learned at HP this year. It is definitely my favorite drill because it involves a lot of quick thinking and communication between you and your partner. Pra-ja is a 2 on 2 game with 2 balls being played at the same time. You and your partner are allowed 3 touches on each ball like normal but you can let the ball bounce in between each contact. In order to get each ball in play one partner from each side will serve one ball to the player on the other side who is not serving. After each ball is in play you play normally but you can let the ball bounce once in between each contact. If one team wins both points they stay and the other team waves through, but if both teams win one point they are both off and two new teams come on. I like this drill because it tests how well you can communicate with your teammate and it trains you to look across the net to tell your partner where he/she should attack the ball to. A hint for this drill is to never tip short. Tipping in the drill is an easy pass for the other team because the short tip will bounce up directly to a player on the other side.

Columbia is another awesome drill. Columbia is run with 4-6 players on each side of the net. The scoring and rules of a normal game apply, the only thing that is different is that every player rotates when your team attacks the ball over the net. I like this drill because you get to experience playing every position. George is similar to Columbia with 4-6 players and regular rules/scoring applies, but if you make a mistake you are out and the next person in line on your team replaces you. I like this drill because it puts pressure on you to not make a mistake. Volleyball is a game of mistakes, every point is caused by a mistake. So everyone is going to make mistakes at some point in a game but it is the team who makes the least mistakes that will come out on top. When you are playing the game George it really makes you focus on the position you are playing because if you want to stay on the court you can’t make a mistake.

These are just some of my favorite drills I have played. I hope this helps if you are looking for fun drills for a practice :)

Athletes And Their Stories

Many athletes have a story for why they have accomplished so much or so little in their life time. This isn't just true for athletes, but for anyone in the world. From what I see is that there are many professional athletes that have came from a sad and hard background. These athletes make it far in their career, not only in their sporting career but in their family life too. They become a person that is strong, hard working and a more loving kind of person.

Football and basketball are some of the sports that you will find athletes with stories. Now a lot of this could do from where they are from or what they have done in their past. These athletes are the ones that have lost someone special in their life, a parent walked out when they were little, abusive home life, drug involvement growing up, etc. This has nothing to do with race or discrimination, it has everything to do with where they are from, grown up and raised.

I have so much respect for athletes with stories like these. It is amazing to me how hard they have worked to be where they are.  It shows and proves that you can do anything no matter how difficult things are in your life. A lot of these athletes will go and speak to young athletes. They are considered motivational speakers to kids that come from backgrounds like them, have a bad attitude, or just think they are better than everyone else. Their stories can reach out and hit young athletes in many different ways. I come from a very good background and these people make me want to be better in many different ways. They make me want to work harder at a sport, whether that is in practice, during a game or the off season. They make me want to be a better and bigger person in life. I start to see how good I have it compared to a lot of other athletes. If I see that they can make it as far and succeed that well, then I don't have any excuse to not do the same.

I encourage you to go listen to a motivational speaker and be open minded with it. Sometimes people cant take them serious, because they are to stuck up with their own life. I guarantee you will walk out of that room and feel like a different person. If you are the type of person that didn't set goals in life, you will after hearing an athlete talk. You will want to change your ways in your life.

Colorado Springs

I was counting down to the day we left for Colorado for a long time. Getting to play my favorite sport in my favorite state with my favorite people was something to look forward to. My dad and I flew out of Chicago and arrived in the Mile High City on a Thursday. We went to Colorado over thanksgiving break last year to ski and it was the best vacation I have been on so I was pumped when I heard we were going to be playing at Crossroads this club season. I had never been to Crossroads before this year, but I had heard nothing but good things about everyone’s experience there. Walking in to the convention center on Friday before we played I could see why everyone said this was their favorite tournament. Everywhere you looked it was either sweet volleyball clothing, everything you can think of that is Nike, every different food vendor, or courts. It was like a volleyball players dream in a big convention center.
We went 2-1 the first day, which made us a second seed in our pool the next day. The second day we went 2-1 again but we were in a 3 way tie for first. We thought we might have had to play a challenge match but we ended up getting first because we had the highest winning percentage out of the other teams. We were pretty excited about that, because we were now in the gold bracket and had a shot at qualifying for nationals. After we were done playing on Saturday, some of my teammates wanted to go see some mountains in Vail because they had never seen them before. I decided to go with, even though I knew it was going to be hard seeing the mountains and not being able to ski. I am obsessed with skiing and being in Colorado and not going skiing is really hard let me tell you. It was still awesome driving around through the mountains, and afterwards we went to a pizza place that had been there for over 200 years!

On Sunday we played at 8 in the morning against a pretty solid team from Florida I think. We won the first game, and then lost the second game. In the third set we fought hard and everyone really wanted to win but we just had a few too many mistakes and some bad calls. We lost 12-15. Losing sucks and I don’t think there is a worse feeling. It was not the way we wanted to end that tournament but I think we became more of a team experiencing that tough loss. We realized how much we all wanted it and the next chance we had to qualify we were going to take it.

Pain

The major side effect of playing a sport is the pain you can receive. Whether it is growing pain, injury pain, or being sore from constantly playing. There is good pain and bad pain. Injury pain is an example of bad pain that you do not want to have, and growing pain and your muscles being sore are good pain. Which pain would you rather have, pain that means you are working hard and that you are becoming stronger, or pain that is constantly hurting and you have to work your strength back up for that muscle? I think every single person would agree with the hard working pain; soreness.

Sore muscle pain feels like your muscles are so tight and that you need to stretch them all day long. If you have worked really hard, lifting, doing agilities, playing a sport you are bound to be sore. Now the amount of soreness relies on how hard you pushed yourself, or how long you have been doing a specific workout. Usually the soreness in your muscles are worse when you have participated in a certain activity for awhile. The is because your muscles are not use to that activity, so they become sore but this is a great sign, because you know your muscles are working and becoming strong. You know you are sore and you worked extremely hard when you squat to sit on the toilet and you just fall on it, because it hurts to go in the squatting position. Even though you have pain for five to six days, it is the type of pain you are proud of and don't mind.

Injury pain absolutely sucks, because it hurts like a mother trucker and you lose all the strength in that muscle, so you have to rebuild up that strength. This take time and you have to go through pain while strengthening. Some people come back stronger than before if they work hard and do what their therapist tell them to do. There are a lot of negative things that come out of an injury. You have to sit out of a sport you love and some confidence in that muscle is lost. The key is to keep working hard and to not worry about injuries and it wont happen to you.

Environment

The environment that athletes play in can change the way they perform. All tournaments have different environments to play in. Qualifiers are large with thousands of people at them. These tournaments consist of college coaches everywhere, up to 100 courts, family members surrounding the court. These tournaments are so official it makes it seem like us athletes are very important. These tournaments I feel like pump up the athlete/athletes to perform well and do the best they can. Where some tournaments like into tournaments or just in a gym doesn't pump up the athlete as much. In these tournaments they don't receive a bag tag or a tag to put around their neck to be able to get in the tournament. These you don't stay at hotels and hangout with your team the hole weekend. They are fun, but the competition isn't the same like it would be at a qualifying tournament. These teams at qualifiers are elite players and are going to big colleges to do big things and then at these smaller tournaments the players just aren't the same. Everything is so much slower, but it is good to work on some more complicated offense and to better your ball control.

I also think that the qualifiers environment helps make the player perform better, because colleges are there to watch and decide which player could fit their school the best. This makes a kid want to perform and do really well, because they might not ever get the same opportunity again. These athletes want to play college volleyball, so being treated so official in these tournaments make them think they are already at that level. I love how there are so many people in the convention center and college coaches are everywhere is pretty freaking cool to me. I like how loud I have to talk to have my hitters hear me. When the tournament is over and my voice is gone, is when I know I worked really hard at that tournament. The excitement of every play is better and more fun than what I have ever experienced. These tournaments make volleyball so much fun and one of the major reasons why I love the sport so much.

Adrenaline

I play for Adrenaline Volleyball Academy out of Robins, IA. I used to play for Six Pack out of Cedar Falls, IA. I love both clubs and have learned a lot about volleyball through both clubs. I have met amazing people and most of these people will be in my life for a long time. I consider my teammates my best friends.

Playing competitive club volleyball insists of an eager to get better and be the best player in the gym. There has to be goals for the team and for yourself. Just going to practice and going through the motions is not going to cut it. When playing volleyball you have to have an urge to win and play as hard as you can. You should feel adrenaline run through your body. Many times before I play I am tired and want to take a nap. When the match starts I don't feel that way anymore. I am more excited and wanting to play as hard as I can.

I would consider my sport friends my closest friends and best friends. They are with me majority of the year and will always have my back. I am extremely thankful for the friends I have made through playing sports. These people will be in my life for ever and ever. Playing a sport with people you love makes it forty times more fun and competitive.

I have learned a lot about how to play volleyball these past five years. I have been with a total of 4 clubs, but where I learned A LOT about volleyball was Six Pack. I've had all amazing coaches. Doug Palmer has taught me a lot of the fundamentals and have made me have the mindset that I have right now. I am truly thankful for him and all he has done for me. My next coach was Marty Smith. He is and was by far the best coach I have ever had. He has made me a tough player physically and mentally. He has taught me that everything you do in life and on the court, you can do better at. I used to be the player where I needed compliments and needed to be told that I was doing good, but after I had Marty as a coach I no longer thought that. He has taught me where I need to be to succeed at a high level. The next coach is Austin Filer. I love Austin, he gives me so much freedom to work on the court. He knows I will get the job done and I have been coached so good in the past that I can coach myself after a mistake, but Austin will tell me and put me in my place if he thinks I am wrong. Austin has done so much for me to get to college. I love that part of him, because I know he believes in me that I can go somewhere big some day. Austin's coaching style is a lot different than what I am used to. He is much calmer than Marty or Doug and I like it. I appreciate having different kinds of coaching styles, because it gets me ready for college.

Dream Big (534)

I've always had a dream to play a sport in college. Watching my sister go off to college doing so, their friends, my cousins doing so has always made me dream of accomplishing that too. I never knew what sport I wanted to play whether that was volleyball, basketball or softball. I have done a lot of thinking and playing these sports throughout the year and one day I finally knew what sport I wanted. Both of my sisters went to college for basketball and I thought that is what I would want to do too, but I want to play volleyball. If you talk to a little kid and ask them what their dreams are, they say crazy things like "I want to be super man. I am going to play NFL right out of high school. I want to have super powers." Now some of these dreams they mention can be done, but they have such a beautiful imagination and want to do something great in their life. When I speak to kids that talk like this make me want to accomplish my dreams so these kids know its possible to do.

When you get to a point in your life where these dreams are becoming reality, it doesn't seem real that you have made it this far. Doing something you love and having the determination to make your dreams come true is an awesome feeling to have. People who make it big and a little kid got a chance to watch them do so, looks up to them and believes they can make it happen too. I never really knew I wanted to play volleyball in college until I was 14. My person I looked up too and knew I could accomplish anything I set my mind too was Kristin Haun. She went to Kennedy High School and played volleyball, softball and basketball. She LOVED softball, but decided to play volleyball in college. She became an all American libero at Iowa State and now plays over seas. I had the chance to watch her succeeded these huge accomplishments and that's when I knew I could do the same. As I started high school I knew I wanted to play volleyball, but didn't know exactly what level I wanted to play at in college. I never thought I could succeed at the level I want to if I went division one, but as I am getting closer to this decision I believe I can, and watching Kristin do it makes me think I can even more.

One thing I have always wanted is some little girl or boy looking up to me and believing they can accomplish anything like I looked up to Kristin. Dreams are always a good thing to have, but making them come true takes a lot of hard work and determination and many kids don't understand that. Every kid needs to know how important it is to have dreams, but most importantly that you can make it happen if you put your mind to it. I have noticed it helps every kid to watch someone that they closely know accomplish theirs to want to make their dream happen.

Stress

There are many stresses and things that could go wrong being an athlete. The biggest thing for me is the time management. I have practices every day along with the homework and family priorities. I often find myself very busy with little free time to relax or do activities. This is the worst during the busiest part of school season and the busiest part of club season when we are gone for days at a time. When you miss school, you have to do all the make up work along with all the current work. It can get very tiring and annoying. Also, it is VERY hard not to get distracted by your phone or other devices, especially after a game day or tournament, when you want to check what people said about the game.
Another stressful thing about playing a sport is being frustrated about being in a rough patch. Sometimes, when you are working at things and trying to get better, you feel like you're getting worse before you get better. There are a lot of failures before success, but eventually you get it. Also, people get frustrated when they are  not doing so well in practice or in a game. In softball this is easy to do, and because so much of the game is mental, one mistake could affect the next play and sometimes the one after that if you get mad, upset, or let it bother you. We just have to remember that it is okay to make mistakes and that you learn from them.

Some ways to prevent this from happening is to take a break from it, or in your free time do things non sports related, so you're not always thinking about it and you're not always with the same people all the time. Sometimes it's not always the sport you get tired of, but the people.
In sports, it's important to have good team chemistry. It is important for the team to get along so they can play well together, and when they don't it can be frustrating. That is another tough thing about playing sports; getting along with your teammates and how to deal with it if you don't. When people don't get along or if players have bad attitudes it can affect the whole team, even if it is just a couple people from the team because it can make the game not fun to play.
All these things are very hard to deal with, but as athletes we have to push through it because that is what happens in sports, and if you love the sport enough it won't matter what you have to deal with to play it.

College

Competitiveness

Sports are something many people love because it allows them to be extremely competitive and show off their skills. Sometimes this competitiveness can get very heated though. If you are on a team where you are not the best at your position it can get very frustrating. You go to practice every day and can't seem to do anything better than them. The coach seems to favor that person more than you. Sometimes you give all your effort and try so hard, but it doesn't work out. There are many ways you can be competitive with your teammates in a way that will affect the team in a positive way.
While you are on a team to become a better athlete, the people surrounding you should also be your friends. If you don't get along it is just going to start drama and nothing good comes of that. With that being said, it is also possible for you to be friendly towards someone you do not particularly like. Being friends with your teammates on and off the court is something truly great though. This builds chemistry on the team and can truly, I believe, affect the way you play. A little friendly competition never hurt anybody.
Sometimes you are not always going to be in the position you would like to be in. You aren't always going to be the best at what you do and that is super frustrating. If you give it your all and are a dedicated athlete who will do anything it takes, there is nothing more you can do about it unfortunately. There is always going to be someone better than you, but don't let this get inside your head. You can be the best to your ability and that is all that matters. It is much more fulfilling to get yourself to the highest level of play possible for yourself as an individual than to simply get yourself on a great team. You could play on a team that is extremely good, but still not reach your highest potential. It is all about what you can do and the things you will do to reach your goals.
While it is not always a favorable situation to be in, it is good to be surrounded by people better than you. This will push you to reach higher and truly see what you are capable of. Athletes can do some pretty great things with a little competitiveness and encouragement.

Hitters

Pin hitters are the name for the hitters other than the middles. They are the right sides and left sides. They can also be called outside and opposite. Outside hitters are supposed to be one of the best hitters on the team. They also should be a decent passer and some even play all six rotations because they are good enough passers to stay in for back row. Right sides, or opposites, are supposed to be good blockers, since they are blocking the other team's outside, or best hitter. You can either run a 5-1 or a 6-2 offense (either one or two setters) and some teams run a 6-2 so that they can have a right side hitter and blocker in at all times.
There are 2 outsides and one right side in the rotation  of six players, but any of these players can be subbed out by a DS or a libero when they get to the back row. The 2 outsides are always opposite each other, or 3 rotations away from each other.
The outsides usually get the majority of the sets, especially when there is a bad pass or they are out of system. On these bad passes, the set probably will not be perfect, so the hitter has to be ready and be able to put the ball in play and be able to adjust to the set. Since these hitters get a lot of the sets, they can also get tired faster than the other hitters, especially if they are playing six rotations. A lot of the time, a coach will tell their players to try and serve or hit at the other team's outside and make her pass to try and fire her out. If it works, she might not hit as well as when she wasn't tired. This might be because she isn't jumping as high, moving as fast, or hitting as hard.
The opposites, on the other hand, usually have someone come in for their back row and are not usually six rotation players . The person who comes in for their back row is almost always a DS, not a libero, since liberos typically come in for the middles.
Also, whenever the setter passes the first ball and the libero has to set, it is almost never going to the middle, so that means that all the balls that the libero sets have to go to the pin hitters. That's another reason why the pin hitters always have to be ready for the ball and be able to adjust to any set. A big part of being ready for a set is transitioning. Transitioning is literally the "transition" between defense(blocking or off block coverage) and offense( being ready to hit). When they transition to their hitting spot, they are supposed to go just past the ten foot line outside the court, although this could change depending on height, quickness, age, and if you are a righty or lefty. For example, if you have long legs and take bigger steps, then you would want to transition further off the net so you have more room for your hitting approach. Also, if you are left handed, you want to start your approach slightly to the right of where a right handed person would start their approach.

Travel Expenses (537)

There are SO many expenses when it comes to sports. Every sport has two seasons. There is a high school season and a club season. During the club season the 'off season' of the high school season begins. This is when lifting, conditioning and open gyms start. These activities cost money too. Once the actual high school season starts there is a food expense for when traveling on the busses, sweat suits, shoes, socks, playing fee, fan gear, and team shirts that are required to be paid when playing a high school sport.

A high school off season looks a lot like a training and conditioning camp. There are open gyms to participate in and if you do so, then you have to pay. The entire point of an off season is to get the rust off the athlete before actual season begins. The strengthening part of off season is probably the most expensive out of it all. This money goes to the coach that works with all sport groups. He gets us physically ready for our upcoming sport. He uses this money to buy new equipment for our weight room. For some reason all this training cost a lot of money for the parents. It doesn't seem like it, but once the season starts and you look at everything you have paid for it all ads up. There are sweat suits that have to be paid for, fan gear to wear to the games, and the players receive a certain shirt for themselves. To me that doesn't make much sense to pay this much money for playing a sport, especially for a school.

Club sports are very understandable for their expenses. The coaches get paid for teaching and getting kids to colleges. At my age in club, it is extremely critical to get recruited, so playing for the right club and coaches cost a little bit more than just average coaching. It also means playing on an elite team, which means larger tournaments that are going to cost more. Playing for a sport team in Iowa, means there is going to be more travel out of state, because that is where you are going to find challenging competition and more colleges will travel to those kind of tournaments. This means hotels are going to be expensive and not just for one night but could be for multiple nights. This begins to ad up in the spring time when all the qualifiers are offered. When traveling that means gas money too and even sometimes plane tickets too. You are guaranteed to go out to eat when traveling and buying shirts or clothes to remember when you go to places.

No matter what sport you want to play there is going to be a price for it. If you want to play it in college than that means you will have to pay even more. My family and I have figured that you pay so much money over the years playing club sports that you end up paying for your college. Your family pays for you to get a scholarship. Basically if you receive a scholarship, you have already paid for college expenses just in a different way.

Listening To Music

Music is a great way to get pumped up before a game, practice, or a social event. There are many different kinds of genre of music that you can listen too. There is slower versions of hip hop or country to listen too when you are sad or in a pissed off mood. In all sports you will see a bunch of the athletes and teammates walking either into the arena, convention center, gym, or on the field with headphones on or ear buds in listening to music that will put them in game mode.

High school teams prepare for their game in the locker room. They talk, fill up their water bottles, change into their uniforms and finally listen to music before the game. The type of music you will find them listening to is pop and up beating music. If they play slower beat music, their bodies and adrenaline is not going to be ready for game time. A lot of teams have a tradition before they go out and play in their game. Some dance to a certain song, warm up a certain way. There are many different things, but there is always something a team does before they go and play their game.

If you don't listen to music now before you play a game, I challenge you to do so. See if you feel a difference before or after you perform a game. Before you should feel a spark of adrenaline and energy to play. Try it and see if there is a difference in your performance.

JVA

The JVA Hawkeye Cup is a power league that is hosted at the Adrenaline gym (which is also a basketball facility). It is spread out over three weekends in a few separate months. The dates are January 9&10, February 20&21, and March 12&13. This league is set up so that the first day of each weekend is the pool play, where you play all the teams in your pool first. Then the second day is the tournament, or bracket play. That is where you play the teams that did similar to you the day before in their pools and if you lose a match you are moved down or done. Each weekend they take in the rankings from the previous weekend to create the new pools for the next weekend, similar to seeding at a regular tournament.
We have already had the first weekend of the power league and we won it. Since the gym is only 3 minutes away from my house, which is very nice for practices, some of the girls stayed at my house the night before we played the first day for convenience, especially for the girls who live really far away. Some of the girls live almost two hours away from where we practice every week! They make that drive two or more times a week for practices and tournaments. We also have a food schedule for all the tournaments that tells us who's turn it is to bring breakfast, lunch, snacks, and drinks. We do this every tournament to make it easier on the players and parents. This makes it so that the players or their parents don't have to leave the gym to get food during a tournament or buy food ahead of time, because the concession food is not that good. At the Adrenaline gym, it is really easy for us to have our food set up at our camp because we get to go into the upstairs level where there are tables and chairs just for us and not the other people there. We are looking forward to the rest of the tournament in the future, it will be fun and I think we will continue to do well.
It is cool to host a tournament where lots of teams from around the state come and play, and it is a great way to get started for the season.

Energy

Playing a sport and loving a sport are two entirely different things. There are a lot of seniors and a couple of juniors. The juniors don't like basketball at all, but go out for the girls and one of the coaches. When people ask the juniors if they want to go out next year, they say "I don't know", because they hate the sport but love the people in it except for some of the coaches. So enjoying and 'living for the sport' is entirely different than just playing the sport. This is true for every sport.

There are many different things that can either make a person 'love the sport' or 'play the sport'. This can be the coaching, personality of the girls, and your own dividual mind set. The type of coaching can determine whether the athlete likes playing the sport or loves the sport. Most of the time if the coach does not give respect to his players, then it is extremely hard to return that respect back. You will find out that in the beginning of the season, it is super easy to give respect, but if it is a long season like basketball where the coach doesn't try to give respect then it is even harder to give it back. Athletes want coaches that will actually 'coach' the player instead of yelling and degrading them when they make a mistake. Coaches should always explain and tell the athlete what they are doing when they make a mistake to help them fix it next time. Coaches aren't there to be your best friend at any means, but they should be there to talk to you or ask for advice and act as a mentor to his or her players. There are a lot of these coaches around, but many of them are the complete opposite where athletes are absolutely terrified to make a mistake.

To love a sport you have to have the right mindset towards the sport. Girls, especially me has a mindset where I think to just get through the season. I count down the days until basketball is over for the year. This is the complete opposite of what your mind set needs to be. I have this mindset, because I feel like us players get treated like complete shit and I am the kind of person that will stick up and back anyone up, because I know where I stand on the team and already know what sport I want to succeed at. I believe I give the respect to coach, but I will back anyone up when I think that they need it. It's not fair to anyone playing the sport to get treated like they are lower than everyone else. In some cases, its not just players that get treated like crap and need to have a good mindset, its the coaches too. Some coaches think they are better and higher than their staff, so they will make sure their staff knows it too. I have noticed this with high school sports. This is probably the thing that pisses me off the most, because they are working together and not just one person running the entire program. I am the kind of person that will stick up for coaches too. I do not like people that treat other human beings like they are nothing. We are in the 21st century, things need to change; whether that is in sports, life or in the work field. Coaches that get treated like this need to have the mindset of positivity.

Different Kinds Of Bras

Young girls and newly women have some problems picking out bras to play sports in. There is such a large variety of sport bras to choose from. There are some that have extra padding in them, so the person doesn't nip through their jersey when competing at the sport. There are also some types that are tighter around the waist the keep everything compact together. Some sport bras are really thin and doesn't have my support so the newly women have trouble competing in these kind of bras. When girls are picking out bras they look for ones that will just protect them from showing their area. Women have to search for bras special for themselves. Some look for the ones with the extra padding, or the tighter ones that are supposed to help keep everything tight so there isn't any sagging of the breast or to much bouncing of them. Women with larger breasts than normal have to special order their sport bras. These kind of bras have velcro and are re-adjustable so it helps them with less movement in the breasts. There are many different kind of brands to choose from just like in my last blog. Nike is a great brand to help prevent nipping through jerseys and under armor is great for the same reason. The problem with these two kind of brands is that they are really expensive, but they are worth the money. These bras aren't for women with overly sized breasts but for women with sizes between B and D. Champion is also another brand that is bought a lot. The problem with these is that they don't provide support at all, so wearing them means there will be sagginess and nipping through a lot. I think of champion bras as more of a pajama bra than a competing in a sport kind of bra. No matter what kind of bra you buy, there will ALWAYS be movement and nipping through. Sport bras can't be tight enough to prevent this, because otherwise you won't be able to breath when playing. If you think about it, choosing a sports bra for a women is very difficult. There is a lot of aspects that go into choosing the right bra for them. Girls is much easier and a lot cheaper. Moms definitely know how much a 'good' sports bra is. They also know the difference in money for them too. I know my mom hates buying sports bras, because they are so expensive and it is like money going down the drain a lot of times.

Strength

If you are serious about your sport, you want to be the strongest and fastest you can be, right? A way to do that is to strength train. Most athletes do some sort of lifting or strength training either one their own or with a program. Here at Kennedy High School we have several different PE options, one being Performance PE where you can do a combination of lifting and agility & core. If students do not take advantage of this class that might be  because they are in a strength program outside of school, or they do not care about getting stronger. Lifting weights and strength training help you be the best athlete you can be and the best player you can be in your sport because training will make you stronger and quicker, which helps with almost everything; jumping, hitting, kicking, swinging, throwing, running, changing direction, etc. Most coaches, whether it's highs school, club, or college, want their players to lift or do some sort of strength training because they can see that it helps them play better. A lot of the time when a player is being recruited to play in college, the coach wants to know what they are doing to strength train and might even ask how much they can lift. For most sports in high school, the coaches have the players lifting and training during the preseason, and lifting during the season. Some coaches even want their players lifting in the off season so that they are staying in shape, with the exception of players who are playing other sports.  In college, that will continue. During our school volleyball season, I had a zero hour lifting class and lifted, and everyone on the volleyball team had to lift during the season. Now that my lifting class is over, I decided to do workouts at Crossfit 2.2 to stay in shape and get stronger for my club season, which is in full swing in the spring. I want to continue this through my club season and continue it after club is over, which will be preseason time for school volleyball. Some players strive to be the best and set goals and break records. Others just want to better themselves and don't really worry about other people. For me, it is about my personal gain, and not being better than other people. I want to get stronger and stay in shape for volleyball.

Differences In Clothing

Is there a difference in the kind of socks, pants, shirts or shoes you wear? Do athletes wear more 'sporty clothes' than any other average person? I have noticed that athletes have many 'sporty clothes' and not just sweatpants but nice expensive kind of brand. With me being an athlete, I think of wearing Nike clothing, because I think Nike resembles the athletic and 'sporty look'. When walking the streets or sitting in school, do you see more people wearing Nike socks or Under armor socks? Personally I see more people wearing Nike socks than any other kind of sock. There are some people that say wearing a brand other than Nike, shows that you are poor or doesn't have as much money when a lot of the times other brands are just as nice, they just don't have the 'extremely athletic' theme behind their clothing.

When I think of a very athletic and talented sporting team, I think of them all dressed up in Nike gear. Over the years Nike has done a great job in portraying themselves as the sporty and athletic brand. Nike clothing is very comfortable and I think it looks the best on players. There are many talented teams that don't wear Nike, but many wish they did. When you think of the brand Rox or Prince, you don't think of a very elite sporting team. There are plenty of teams that are in the top 10 across the country and are wearing these kind of brands. What I am trying to say is that Nike has portrayed themselves extremely well and the sporty look and not many brands have done that, so more and more people will buy Nike clothing and think of the other brands as not so nice.

I have heard many comments where people don't believe that athletes dress up a lot. From what I have seen this statement can be some what true, but in many cases it is false. Athletes love to bum at school, but when it comes to dressing up they can pull it off good. I know for me, I love to dress up and look like a girl, instead of always wearing athletic clothes. I would say athletes dress up more than they bum. Yes they have a lot of variety when it comes to athletic clothes and tennis shoes, but athletes ALWAYS know how to dress to impress.
